When your parents tell you to do something, do you listen and obey right away? You might not feel like it if they want you to wash the dishes or make your bed. If what they’re telling you is something good like getting in the car so you can go for ice cream, you probably do what they say instantly! Your parents expect that you’ll follow their directions. More than that, God expects you to obey your parents. It’s part of the commandments He gave us in the Bible to follow.

When God gives instructions, He wants us to pay attention and obey just like with our parents. Mary was visited by the angel, Gabriel, who told her she was going to be the mother of Jesus. After receiving the message, Mary willingly agreed to be part of His plan. Joseph had a similar experience with an angel through a dream. After he woke up, Joseph followed the angel’s instructions right away. Mary’s and Joseph’s response to God reminds us that obeying the Lord, doing everything He desires us to do, is always the right thing. Following God’s plan is always for our good and His glory.

Why should you obey and honor your parents?

What does it look like to listen and obey the Lord?

Play a game of Simon Says. Everyone should take turns being the leader and the players. As a leader, give clear instructions. As a player, listen carefully and follow the leader’s instructions. As our perfect leader, God gives us good instructions for our best and for His glory to be shown through us.
